Take note of these crime incidents in your area

MIDRAND – In the first 18 days of March, Sector 4 neighbourhoods experienced six crime incidents according to Midrand police.


If you live in Glenferness, Kyalami, Barbeque Downs, Beaulieu or Blue Hills, here are what crimes were reported in your neighbourhood between 1 and 18 March.

These suburbs make up Sector 4 of the Midrand policing area and experienced a range of crimes including shoplifting and armed robbery. This information was relayed to the Fourways Review by Sergeant Matome Tlamela, the spokesperson for the Midrand Police Station.

Ex-employee allegedly refuses to return company phones

On 1 March a case of theft was reported in the Kyalami area. An employee who had resigned from his job at a recycling company handed back his company cell phone to his boss. Later when his boss was going through company records, the boss noticed that the employee had actually signed out seven other cell phones (together worth about R7 500) during his time with the company but never returned them. When the former employee was contacted by management about the matter, he allegedly told them he no longer worked for them and as such would not return the items. Management contacted the police to investigate the matter further.

Gate motor stolen

On 14 March a case of theft in the Dainfern area was reported to Midrand Police Station. A man woke up at about 7am, got ready for work and went to leave the property. When he arrived at the gate in his driveway, he realised that the motor which operated it the gate had been stolen. The motor was worth about R6 500. A case has been opened and the police are investigating the matter.

Man’s car ransacked in minutes

On 16 March a case of theft out of a motor vehicle was reported in Barbeque Down. At about 8.30am a motorist parked his car at a petrol station in the area to quickly make a purchase. He returned to his vehicle a few minutes later and continued his drive to work without noticing anything different. When he arrived at his company, he discovered that the boot to his car had been pried open and his laptop, as well as two laptop chargers, had been stolen from the vehicle, altogether worth R12 200. The suspect is not yet known to police.

Grandmother carjacked and robbed

On 17 March a case of carjacking and robbery was reported in Kyalami area. At about midday a woman, together with her grandson, had parked a Toyota Land Cruiser at a horse stable in the area preparing to enter the premises. A beige vehicle pulled up to the scene and two men got out of the car, pointed their firearms at her and demanded that she hand over her car keys. She did so, telling them to take what they wanted, and the men also took her diamond engagement ring. The suspects drove off (one in the woman’s car and the other in the car they arrived in), also taking with them a pair of riding shoes, racing shoes, a riding helmet, two cell phones and the woman’s handbag (containing two passports, her driver’s license, her ID, credit cards, a pearl necklace and R2 000 in cash) that were in her vehicle. In total, all the items stolen (including the car) were worth over R400 000.

Smash-and-grab on Summit Road

On 18 March a case of theft out of a motor vehicle was reported in the Blue Hills area. At about 8.30pm a motorist was at the intersection of the R55 and Summit Road, waiting for the traffic lights to change, when an unknown male suspect quickly smashed the vehicle’s window, grabbed the man’s cell phone and ran away. The phone, together with the cost of window repairs, is R6 000 and police are still investigating the matter.

Suspected shoplifter nabbed

On 18 March a case of shoplifting was reported in the Kyalami area. At about 1pm a grocery store employee was working at the tills, bagging a female customer’s groceries and waiting for the woman’s payment to go through, when the employee noticed that a blender (worth about R5 500) was still in the trolley. She asked the customer about the items, and the customer insisted that this was her second trip to the store and she had paid for them previously. Security was called to check the cameras, and when the guards saw that this was not the case, they contacted police. The customer was arrested on the scene.
