Fourways residents experience water outage over multiple days

FOURWAYS – The water situation in Fourways areas and surrounds over the week had residents angry and unsure about when the water would return without issues.

Throughout the week of 7 March, residents in Fourways went without water for a number of days while burst pipes in the area were being repaired.

Two burst pipes in Fourways, namely on the corners of William Nicol Drive and Fourways Boulevard as well as Uranium Street and William Nicol Drive caused many residents to be without water for up to a week.

Ward 94 councillor David Foley was keeping residents updated on Johannesburg happenings on Twitter.

“The pipe [near the corner of William Nicol and Fourways Boulevard] was leaking for some time and going into the properties nearby for two and a half years, leaving the foundations soggy. A hole was drilled into the pipe and created a stop valve which then led to the water being turned on again,” Foley told the Fourways Review.

Foley said residents along Cedar Road, Fourways Boulevard, William Nicol Drive and Uranium Street had no water.

While the repairs were taking place on William Nicol Drive and Fourways Boulevard, a big leak sprung up on the corner of Uranium Street and William Nicol Drive which lead to the water being turned off at the pipe to locate the source of the problem which had an impact on the greater Fourways region.

On 9 March, residents living near William Nicol Drive and Uranium Street logged a call to Johannesburg Water about litres of water gushing down the road.

A 50-year-old pipe had burst and was expelling water at a frightening rate. Excavations and investigations were done to find the source of the problem.

Communications manager at Johannesburg Water, Isaac Dhludhlu said the issues affecting surrounding areas of Fourways included Dainfern, Fourways Gardens, Witkoppen and surrounding areas.

Dhludhlu said that the pipe on the corner of William Nicol Drive and Fourways Boulevard was fixed on 11 March and was caused due to ageing infrastructure.

On Uranium Street, contractors discovered the leak and commenced welding on the pipe for repairs on 11 March.

Another incident which affected many residents occurred at Government Road and Pritchard Street when one of the Johannesburg Water contractors damaged the 600mm AC main pipe.

“Delay on this was the manufacturing of special fittings which was completed late evening last night and delivered on site,” he said. Areas that were affected included Kya Sands, Noordhang, Bloubosrand, Maroeladal, Cedar Creek, Cedar Lakes, parts of Broadacres, Needwood, Chartwell, Johannesburg North and Farmall. Repairs had to be delayed from Friday morning as there was flooding in the area from overnight rains.

“We have placed a number of water tankers to assist in the meantime until the problem is resolved,” said Dhludhlu.

On Friday, 13 March, Johannesburg Water announced on Twitter that water was being restored back to the affected areas and water should be restored in the affected areas.
