City Power security officer shot after a robbery at one of its substations, City Power reviews security measures

JOBURG – Load-shedding has left City power reviewing its security measures after four security guards were attacked at one of its substations.

Four City Power security officers were attacked in an apparent robbery at City Power’s Prospect substation near City Deep.

Following the attack on 11 March, City Power has decided to review all of its security measures.

Speaking to Jacaranda FM, the spokesperson for City Power, Isaac Mangena said the security guards were on night shift duty when they were confronted by three individuals who allegedly jumped the parameter fence at the substation. Mangena said this happened while load-shedding was being implemented in the area.

“The four were held up at gunpoint before being robbed off their cell phones and pocket money. “One of the security guards managed to escape and seek help while the other three were being assaulted,” said Mangena.

One of the three security officers was shot at close range in the neck and was in a critical condition in Milpark Hospital.

The three suspects were disturbed by two City Power operators who went to Prospect substation to restore power following load-shedding in the area.

Cleveland police were present at the scene and will be conducting an investigation.
