Douglasdale residents show their true colours

DOUGLASDALE – Support came from community members young and old who donated and shaved their hair for the annual Cansa Shavathon.

Douglasdale residents showed their community spirit during a Cansa Shavaton event.

Many gathered outside the Gathering o’ the Clans pub at the Douglasdale Shopping Centre on 29 February to participate in the annual event. Music played loudly from inside the pub and the chatter was even louder.

The bubbly Tracy Oyster, who helped Lorna Kane, to organise this year’s event greeted all who donated or sprayed their hair. “We are a very close community. Every year whenever we have an event like this, it’s always so nice to see everyone come together and do their part in order to help with this initiative,” she said.

Oyster, who herself is a cancer survivor, believed that her survival was linked to helping others in volunteering with the Shavathon every year. She also said she aspires to bring more positivity to those in her community. “We are celebrating life but are mourning those who have left us from cancer.”

She has been involved with the organising of the Shavathon for nine years. Of the nine, she has organised seven.

During the afternoon, four donations of ponytails came in that afternoon – Kane was one of the donors and Prelisha Dukhran had 31cms of her hair cut off. A wave of people came to photograph the big moment, and Oyster rushed in to give her a hug, thanking her for the donation.

Children also took part in the fun getting their hair spray all different colours and taking photographs.

Kane, who has donated her ponytail every year, organised this year’s Shavathon and was happy at the turnout. “We always have people pulling their weight to help spread the word about the Shavathon and to have this many ponytail donations is amazing,” she said.

A strong feeling of closeness and appreciation for everyone in the community was felt, as many were encouraged to cut and spray paint their hair.
