Success for police after crime incidents in Riversands and Kyalami

MIDRAND – Two arrests have been made in response to two separate crime incidents which occurred in Sector 4 in the last few weeks.

Two arrests have been made recently regarding crime incidents in Sector 4 of the Midrand policing precinct.

Midrand Police Station spokesperson Sergeant Matome Tlamela said that the first incident took place on 30 January at about midnight. A family living in the Riversands area were awoken by their property alarm going off. The husband, who went to investigate, encountered two armed house robbers in his living room. The man retrieved his firearm from his gun safe, and a shoot-out between himself and the suspects ensued. As the suspects fled the house, they let off one last round which struck the man’s wife. Only a television was stolen from the scene, and the wife was rushed to the hospital for her injuries.

Tlamela confirmed that on 31 January one of the robbers was arrested at a construction site near where the incident had occurred. Police are still searching for the second suspect.

The second incident took place on 3 February when an employee at a Kyalami guesthouse called police to report a case of bilking (when a customer leaves a business establishment without paying) as reported in the Fourways Review article Guest unable to pay his bill [Week ending 14 February]. The suspect, Pillay Kishen, arrived at the guesthouse on 2 February and requested accommodation for the night, promising to pay the next day. The man stayed the night and also enjoyed a meal, but the next morning admitted to the employee that he was unable to pay the bill as he had no money.

According to Tlamela, Kishen was arrested on 3 February and then shortly after appeared in magistrate’s court, where he was sentenced to a R3 000 fine or three month’s imprisonment.
