A near victory for Fourways High School

FOURWAYS – The U16 water polo players at Fourways High played with their hearts on their caps at the Saheti U16 Water Polo Tournament.


Over the weekend of 1 February, Fourways High School produced fantastic sports results.

These results included the first cricket team’s six-wicket win against Bryanston High School, the volleyball team winning the majority of their matches against Diocesan School for Girls, and the tennis girls placing in 20th position out of 26 schools in the 2020 Inter High Tennis Tournament.

Another outstanding result was the U16 boys’ water polo team’s effort in the Saheti U16 Water Polo Tournament. Schools which also participated were Pecanwood College, Reddam House Bedfordview, Saheti School and Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool.

After beating all their competitors convincingly, with their best result being their 7–1 win against Affies, the Fourways team took on the hosts for the gold medal. After a closely contested battle, Saheti sneaked home with a 7–5 victory.

Fourways’ Bryce Young and Joshua Gordon-Cumming were the team’s top scorers, racking up 13 and six goals respectively and showing great skill in their matches.

Coach Jonathan Currie hailed his team’s performance throughout the tournament and gave an honourable mention to goalkeeper Liam Swinburn for his outstanding play in the final.

“The boys showed immense character throughout the tournament and they did their school proud. The final match was definitely one of the most impressive games of water polo I’ve seen in my life,” the coach said.
