NASGB urges parents to get involve in their children’s education and learning process

Johannesburg East regional secretary of the National Association of School Governing Bodies (NASGB), Kenneth Vickerman has urged parents to get involved in their children’s learning process in schools.

This was after the provincial department of education in the province officially announced the 2019 matric results.

The association which works with school governing bodies, parents and teachers said it was happy with the matric results in Johannesburg District 9, however, appealed to the department of basic education in the province to intervene in those schools that achieved less than 80 per cent to improve their matric results this year.

“We as NASGB of District 9 in Johannesburg region are quite happy with the achievement of this year’s matric results considering the challenges that our teachers and learners had during last year,” said Vickerman. “We had, for example, in areas like Alexandra and the inner-city a number of protests that interfered with learning process in schools. In other schools, incidents of gangsterism took its toll and had some bad effects on some learners.”

He urged those learners who didn’t pass to go back to school and rewrite in the matric examination rewrite period. “Parents and guardians must encourage and support them with all their needs to ensure that we avoid [having] a number of youngsters who have no matric.”
