Draw to make a difference

CHARTWELL – Your art can make all the difference. If you want to get involved with the Night of a 1000 Drawings there's a drop-off point right here in Chartwell.

Show you have a heart by donating a single piece of art.

This is the idea behind the Night of a 1 000 Drawings, an international art exhibition where ordinary members of the public create and donate A5-sized pieces of art in whatever medium they like for charity.

A special art exhibition, which will take place in March this year, is then held where members of the public can buy any pieces that catch their eye for R150 each, with proceeds going to three non-profit organisations which are trying to make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate.

This year, Fourways residents who wish to donate a piece of art can do so easily, now that a drop-off point has been set up at the art.well gallery, which is located at the Stables Village Market in Chartwell. They can also use any medium they like to create their art, from paint to pencil to even embroidery or pewter!

“We’ve set up a donation box [at the gallery] and people are welcome to drop off their donations until a few days before the Night of a 1 000 Drawings exhibition,” explained Sally Rumball, the art.well gallery owner.

“The gallery is open Wednesday through to Sunday, from 9am until 4pm, for people to drop off.”

This year, the three organisations that will receive the funds raised are Paballo Ya Batho, the Dlala Nje Foundation and the Everybody Loves Everybody (ELE) organisation.

Paballo Ya Batho was founded in 1989 and supports people facing hardship through soup kitchens and feeding schemes, those who face homelessness and unemployment.

The Dlala Nje Foundation supports children in underprivileged communities by creating community centres where they can receive academic assistance, learn new skills (like computer skills) or enjoy leisure activities (such as boxing classes or yoga).

ELE focuses on education and early childhood development needs and supports children through financial assistance and linking them to corporate sponsorship.

This year’s Night of a 1 000 Drawings exhibition will be held from 27 to 29 March at the Victoria Yards in Lorentzville.

Besides donating artwork or attending the exhibition, volunteers to help on the night are welcome as are cash donations.
