Ward 96 councillor Sbusiso Mthembu looks back on a busy year

CHARTWELL – Sbusiso Mthembu, the councillor for Ward 96, reflects on some of the issues (both good and bad) that affected his ward in 2019.

Sbusiso Mthembu, Ward 96 councillor writes:

What a year!

Ward 96 launched a couple of projects, both from the private and public sector. More residents were employed in 2019 compared to the past two years that I have been a ward councillor. This will definitely have a positive impact in reducing the poverty and unemployment rate in this ward. I expect more jobs to be created in 2020 as Cosmopolitan housing projects will be introduced into the area from 3 December.

This project is expected to last at least five years.

The Thabo Mbeki informal settlement electrification still continues to compromise the ward in terms of resident unrest and marches blocking Malibongwe Drive and the R114 road, In October, Eskom came to the community and removed all illegal power transformers from the community, so the community exploded for at least one week. We had to call the SAPS to monitor the area 24/7 until the situation subsided. The Lion Park Primary School and clinic were both affected as power supply was cut and left the facilities without power.

The community burned the electrical poles along the R114 road, but Eskom replaced the poles in late November.

I would love to wish all of Ward 96 and the City of Johannesburg residents a wonderful festive season and a prosperous 2020.

Let’s continue to work together and hold each other’s hands for the benefit of our community and the betterment of all South Africa.
