Dancers fundraise for animals

PAULSHOF – Duncan Studio Irish dancers are ready to take on the Irish dancing World Championships.

Dancers from the Duncan Studio of Celtic Dance in Paulshof were invited to perform for charity at The Magic of the Movies variety dance show held at Cliffview Primary School on 13 October.

The event was organised by the Chiquita School of Spanish Dancing to raise funds for the Soweto Animal Rescue Centre.

Founder of the Duncan Studio of Celtic Dance Susan Theron said, “Our senior dance group of 11 dancers performed the Reel Around the Sun to the music from Lord of the Dance, which the audience was enthralled with.

“We were thrilled to be afforded the opportunity to dance in this production and to help raise funds for the Soweto Animal Rescue Centre.

“We have a strong sense of community having danced for many charities over the years helping to raise funds for those less fortunate.”

Founder of Soweto Animal Rescue Centre Jerry Selwane said, “The Magic of Movies event was a huge success. A total amount of R13 000 was raised for the centre and will be going towards constructing a clinic on the premises and also an animal rescue.”

Most of the dancers in this group of seven female and four male dancers, along with many others from the Duncan Studio, recently qualified for the Irish Dancing World Championships. The championships will be held in Dublin in Ireland next year from 5 to 12 April.

Theron said, “Our dancers have been practising tirelessly for this competition and will be doing so throughout December as well. Irish and highland dance classes are held throughout the week except on Sundays.

“Young children from five years old or even younger depending on the child can start our dancing classes.

“Parents who may feel their child has no rhythm need to remember that for some, rhythm is taught while for others it comes naturally.”
