Diepsloot man arrested for illegal possession of a firearm

DIEPSLOOT – A Diepsloot man from Ext 11 who was in possession of an unlicensed firearm was one of 118 suspects arrested over 19 and 20 October.

Efforts to curb the proliferation of illegal firearms in Diepsloot paid off when police arrested a 30-year-old male suspect for possession of an unlicensed firearm on 19 October, according to a statement released by Captain Tinyiko Mathebula, the spokesperson for the Diepsloot Police Station.

Police officers were performing crime prevention duties in the informal settlement when they received a call from an informant who alleged that they saw a man with a firearm in Ext 11. The officers proceeded to the location where the suspect had been seen. Upon arrival, they acted swiftly to search the suspect and found a firearm in his possession. The suspect failed to produce a licence for the firearm and was subsequently arrested and charged with the possession of an unlicensed firearm.

This arrest is among the 118 arrests effected over the weekend across seven policing precincts: Diepsloot, Douglasdale, Florida, Honeydew, Linden, Randburg and Roodepoort. Arrests were made for a number of crimes including possession of drugs, selling without a licence, malicious damage to property, fraud and rape.

Those arrested will appear in the Randburg and Roodepoort magistrates’ courts soon.
