More than 900 suspects arrested over the weekend

JOHANNESBURG – Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo said police are intensifying operations to deal with serious and violent crimes.


More than 900 suspects are due to appear in various magistrates’ courts from today (28 October) on charges related to murder, attempted murder, rape, drunk and driving, house robbery, business robbery and possession of drugs.

According to a statement by Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo, “Eighteen of these suspects were found in possession of unlicensed firearms during stop-and-search operations and tip-offs from members of the community.” 

Masondo said firearms suspected to have been used during the commission of house robberies, hijackings and murders were found in several areas of Gauteng which includes Johannesburg CBD and Douglasdale.

“Furthermore, intelligence-driven operations yielded positive results in Johannesburg where more than 200 suspects were arrested for crimes ranging from assault, robbery, possession of suspected stolen property, rape, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearm and possession of drugs.”

Masondo said the police are intensifying operations to deal with serious and violent crimes and members of the community are commended for taking charge by reporting crime as it happens.
