Sedumedi Foundation is recognised

DIEPSLOOT – Diepsloot resident Refilwe Sedumedi won an award for her work in educating her community about cancer.

Diepsloot resident and founder of Sedumedi Foundation, Refilwe Sedumedi received an award at the 2019 South Africa’s Women Givers Awards Ceremony that recently took place at Rustika Guest Lodge in Johannesburg.

The Bontlebame non-profit organisation was founded by Kea Modise Moloto, who is also the executive director, in 2010. The awards were launched in 2015 to celebrate women of all ages, races, from different walks of life, functioning in different spaces, who go out of their way to ensure the well-being and meaningful development and upliftment of others.

The women were nominated and awarded based on their individual efforts or the efforts of the organisations they currently lead or established.

Moloto said, “Refilwe was awarded for founding the Sedumedi Foundation which focuses on creating cancer awareness in black communities especially after losing her mom to cancer and herself suffering from cancer and seeing community members naming the killer disease everything but cancer.”

She added that the awards were a full house, attended by corporates, representatives from the Department of Social Development and Mrs Commonwealth Ambassador South Africa Puseletso Modimogale.

When asked about how she felt about receiving an award, Sedumedi said, “It was an amazing feeling. It really shows how people recognise what I’m doing, being selfless and doing things from my heart. I was in tears, overwhelmed with joy when I received the award because being nominated and winning an award are two different things, so it was a big deal that I received it.”

Her foundation will host a breast cancer awareness walk on 26 October at Diepsloot Sarafina Park. “I want to reach out to as many people as I can, especially in informal settlements and make them aware that there is life after cancer and early detection saves lives.”

The award ceremony was sponsored by Rustika Guest House, Windrush Spa, Digital Republic Consulting, 101 Party Hire, Deetlefs Wine Estates, Decode Communication, Sarah Webb Photography, Indaskys professional sound and video equipment hire and Office Executives.
