A busy start for Pinnacle’s learners

KYALAMI – Learners at Pinnacle College Kyalami have loads of fun while learning.

September has been an exciting time at Pinnacle College Kyalami (PCK). Besides the fact that the school is gearing up for its new facilities, which will be finalised in the coming months, learners and teachers have been dabbling with fun and creativity.

The school’s Grade 1s were tasked with deciding what they felt the colours of the South African flag represented. After much discussion, they wanted the red to represent ‘love’, the blue, ‘fresh, running water’, the yellow ‘sunshine, happiness and bees’, the green, the ‘trees and other plants’, the black, ‘a house for everyone ‘ and the white ‘electricity’. They then planned the project in groups, painted and cut out their pictures and finally got to place them onto the flag. The result was a beautiful piece of collaborative work.

The toddler group inspected silkworms and looked at how big they are getting! Talking about flowers for the week, they fed white roses different coloured water and watched the change, discovering what has happened to the rose without any water to drink. The Grade 7s were introduced to a brand-new topic – integer values. Learning about positive and negative numbers, they worked in groups playing integer Jenga, dominoes and maze game to consolidate the concept.

Grade 4 to 7 learners have been using their thinking hats to reflect on their achievements and performance and are working on setting Smart (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-limited) goals for their final term. The Grade 11s returned to school following their leadership camp Sediba Kwele Adventures. A weekend of growth, teamwork and reflection as they get ready for the move into their matric year.

Spring is here and it means festivities at PCK. Learners dressed in their brightest for the occasion – the prep Art Club made spring hats and the high school celebrated Sunflower Day wearing their topes (bandanas) in support for individuals diagnosed with life-threatening blood diseases like leukaemia. KLM Royal Dutch birthday celebrations also took place at PCK as they broke the world record – 15 000 sheets of paper with words of hope were distributed to schools and made into paper planes by the children.

Together at 8.15am on 13 September, across Gauteng, the planes were flown in support of plant food gardens and trees which will be developed in places where people are in great need.
