Lego structures built by JhbLUG and displayed on tables were the order of the day.

Member of JhbLUG, Nadeya McGee explained what the group was about, “JhbLUG is basically a group that promotes Lego and we do it for fun. We want to show people what they can do with Lego.”

Unity College principal Deon Visser said the reason behind the event was to gain exposure. “We are a special needs school and not a lot people know we exist and we are hoping to bring the public onto the campus so they can know what we all about.

“Lego is also very helpful and is used in our classrooms.”

Nicole van den Berg, a Unity College occupational therapist gave some insight on the benefits of Lego for children with special needs. “Lego is awesome because copying of patterns helps with visual perception and planning, and if the structure is their own idea then that helps with their imagination, cognitive planning and bilateral skills.”

Toy store, Pops Toys, had a pop-up store set up at the school for anyone interested in purchasing Lego sets. Store owner, Natalie Schmitt said the store always collaborated with JhbLUG at such events and they were always a success.
