Lend a hand and ‘bake’ a difference

LONEHILL – If there was ever a good reason to treat yourself to a cupcake, this is it. Support childhood sufferers of cancer and their families by visiting Lonehill Shopping Centre on 28 September.

Not that you need an excuse to eat cupcakes, but what if doing so would help childhood cancer sufferers and their families in the battle back to health?

This Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, why not lend your support to the Cupcakes of Hope non-profit company as they hold their eighth annual National Cupcake Day 4 Kids with Cancer event on 28 September, which will be taking place for the first time at Lonehill Shopping Centre. Buy yourself a sweet cupcake treat and you can help raise both awareness and funds to care for children with cancer and their families.

“This was started by Sandy Cipriano after the three-year-old child of a friend of hers was diagnosed with cancer,” explained Lizette Robertson, who is the Lonehill coordinator for this year’s event.

“The first year they raised about R5 000, and it’s grown since then, raising R1.8 million last year.”

Aside from raising awareness about the issue, the event also raises money that is used for families affected by childhood cancer. The organisation supports about 70 children and their families each month with buying items such as nappies, covering transport costs incurred while travelling for treatment and otherwise helping parents to get the care that their child needs.

This year, 88 malls and shopping centres around South Africa will host a cupcake sale on behalf of the organisation, including Lonehill Shopping Centre for the first time, thanks to Robertson, who is a new arrival to Johannesburg.

“Last year I realised that the centre was not selling cupcakes,” she explained. “When I called them up to ask about it, they suggested that I set up this year’s event in Lonehill.”

Robertson, along with help from three other local companies, will be selling between 300 and 600 cupcakes at the centre on the day with proceeds going to the Cupcakes of Hope. “Generosity costs nothing. Myself and the other volunteers really need people to come support, so on the day people can choose what flavour cupcakes they want!”

The Cupcakes 4 Kids with Cancer event will be taking place at Lonehill Shopping Centre (in the foyer near Pick n Pay) on 28 September from 8am until 4.30pm. Cupcakes will be on sale for R10 each, and you are also welcome to get in touch with Robertson about contributing next year.
