Douglasdale police gears up women to be safety promoters
DOUGLASDALE – The meeting was held with the Department of Community Safety and Pipeline Informal settlement to fight against gender-based violence.
To fight gender-based violence Douglasdale Police Station with the Department of Community Safety held a meeting on 10 September at Vukuzenzele Centre (Thusong Service Centre) in Johannesburg, with the women of Pipeline Informal Settlement in Kya Sands, in order to ensure an active participation of women in programmes geared towards reducing violence against women and children.
According to a statement, spokesperson for the Douglasdale police, Captain Mpho Tshetlhane said, “Women were encouraged to respect themselves and their partners, to look after themselves and their children, report issues of gender-based violence, and to break the silence against abuse.”
One of the outcomes was the establishment of a committee that would be leading the forum meetings, these type of discussions will be extended to other areas. Tshetlhane added that they believe this can help build healthy and safe families free of violence.
