Sunninghill Striders amped for first 10km

SUNNINGHILL – Local running club cannot wait for its first 10km road race.

It is all systems go for Sunninghill Striders as they have almost all the details ironed out for their first official 10km road race.

The Food Lover’s Market Two-in-One kicks off at 7am at Chilli Lane Shopping Centre on 22 September. It will feature a 10km race and 5km fun run that will take runners through Sunninghill and parts of Midrand.

“The 10km is an official race with Central Gauteng Athletics and all authorities on board. The 5km fun run will be family oriented and lots of fun,” said club chairperson Nestor Espinoza.

He explained that while cash prizes will be available for the more-serious 10km run, organisers plan to have casual prizes for the first pram or dog to finish the 5km fun run.

The route will take runners on long and wide roads such as Woodmead and Maxwell drives and Allandale Road. Marshals and Metro police will ensure runners and motorists are kept safe by partially closing roads, although no roads will be fully closed.

Espinoza was discussing this after Sunninghill Striders sent 40 athletes to the Old Eds Road Race on 11 August for what marked the end of the winter break and the start of the new running calendar.

“Most people were not going for their personal bests as this was our first run after winter recess. We only had a few people finish the 21km in less than two hours, when normally it is half our runners.”

Espinoza said Sunninghill Striders caters for everyone, no matter how fit they are. It is for this reason he expects many families with young children and dogs at the Two-in-One.

The run has an entry limit of 2 000. The first 200 people to enter will receive free T-shirts. Entries will open on 14 August.
