Diepsloot children receive career advice at expo

DIEPSLOOT – Diepsloot learners have been offered an opportunity to explore different career opportunities through the Cyril Ramaphosa Foundation.

The Cyril Ramaphosa Foundation, through its Thari programme, recently hosted its third annual Career Expo in Diepsloot.

Thari is a school-based programme that aims to strengthen the school community by creating a safe and empowering environment that is academically effective, inclusive, and free from the violence which promotes the health and well-being of all. The pilot programme currently supports women and children in eight schools in Gauteng and the Free State.

The foundation adopts a holistic approach in its programmes, recognising that specific development concerns are impacted on by a range of factors.

The Thari programme was born out of a recognition that many young people do not do well at school due to the abuse, violence and the lack of care that they experience outside of the school environment.

When the foundation adopted Diepsloot Combined School to facilitate the Thari Programme in 2017, it recognised the ongoing work of other stakeholders at schools and at a community level. It established a working relationship between all these role-players through a stakeholder’s forum. This includes school principals, the Department of Social Development, Honeydew Police Station, Afrika Tikkun, Diepsloot Police Station Youth desk, Sanca, South African Anxiety and Depression Group, Department of Health, Diepsloot Youth Programme, Lawyers against Abuse and The Bear Foundation.

Bernice Maponyane, a representative of Adopt-a-School, the Cyril Ramaphosa Foundation partner entity that implements Thari, said, “The Career Expo was conceptualised and established in response to concerns raised by the stakeholders’ forum that learners in Diepsloot are leaving school without a clear view of the career options available to them.”

Maponyane further explained what they are hoping to achieve through this programme, “Our aim is to see all learners understand their career aspirations and develop positive attitudes towards learning.

“We hope that through such initiatives and partnerships, our learners can integrate their career into whole-person development and life-long learning, utilising the acquired knowledge and skills to better their own lives and those of their families and community.”
