Suspect arrested after shoot-out with police allegedly shot and injured a taxi driver

DOUGLASDALE – The police found several rounds of live ammunition and firearms in the suspect's possession.


A man (26) was arrested after a shoot-out with police officers in Douglasdale on 26 July. Earlier that day, the suspect was allegedly involved in shooting in Honeydew.

Spokesperson for the Gauteng police, Captain Kay Makhubele said, “The suspect drove to Douglasdale to one of the estate houses and threatened the security guards by pointing a firearm at them. The security called the police who responded very quickly and cornered the suspect in the house. The suspect started shooting at the police, police returned fire and called backup. The suspect was arrested without any injuries.”

No police officers were injured during the incident. Earlier that day, the suspect allegedly shot and injured a taxi driver in Honeydew. The motive behind that incident is unknown at the time.

During the arrest, Makhubele said the police found the suspect in possession of three unlicensed firearms, 800 rounds live ammunition for various firearms, a hand grenade, 13 pistol magazines, three rifles magazines and 34 short gun ammunitions. The vehicle used during the commission of the crime was impounded.

Makhubele commended the quick response by the Gauteng police management, “Provincial Commissioner of Gauteng Lieutenant General Elias Mawela gave the introduction to one of seven priorities to deal with serious and violent crimes in Gauteng. This matter has been prioritised and must be investigated by seasoned detectives of the province.”

The suspect has been charged with attempted murder, pointing of a firearm and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
