Polar Bear Swim honours a charity

NIETGEDACHT – It may be winter, but the children of HeronBridge College did not allow that to stop them from taking a swim in order to help keep animals warm in the coming months.

HeronBridge College faced the cold for a good cause when they hosted their annual Polar Bear Swim Fundraiser on 28 June.

This year, the school chose to support and help their partner charity ‘put cold bums on beds’ by supporting our four-legged friends who cannot speak for themselves.

A number of animal organisations were helped, including the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals as well as Woodrock Animal Rescue. Everyone was welcome to take a dive in the cold water for the cause, come out to support the swimmers or donate. At the start of this project, the partnering charity managed to donate 80 beds but needed 420 more beds to reach their target before 15 July.

The initiative was run by the school’s life orientation and physical education teacher, Ali Bennett.

Learners could support this fundraiser by buying a grey blanket for R25 from Westpack, which was used to make animal beds, by donating R25 in cash to the cause or to donating a bag of dog or cat food for charity.

This project can still be donated to:
