Laugh for a good cause

SUNNINGHILL – Non-profit organisation The Angel Network recently hosted top comedians at the Barnyard Theatre for a good cause.

The Barnyard Theatre in Rivonia was packed to capacity on Saturday, 22 June, when The Angel Network hosted a stand-up comedy show, Stand Up Comedy For a Cause, to raise funds. Among the comedians on the evening was Alfred Adrian, Tracy Klaas, Glen Biederman-Pam, Chris Forrest and John Vlismas.

The Angel Network is a voluntary organisation, run solely via social media. The non-profit organisation provides a portal to offer help wherever needed by giving a hand up as opposed to a handout. The executive committee consists of five ladies who do volunteer work with every cent received going to beneficiaries.

Beneficiaries of The Angel Network where also present at the show as they were treated to pizza and refreshments, while they were entertained by top comedians. Noxolo Luthuli a sixth-year medical student at Wits University explained how she benefited from The Angel Network. “The Angel Network has helped me a lot with my fees, they’ve also helped me with support in what I need. I have a psychological condition which is a norm for us medical students, I’m on medication and they’ve assisted me to cover my medical costs and overall they’ve also helped me with fees for my accommodation,” she said.

Founder of The Angel Network Glynne Wolman said, “In the past three years, we have been instrumental in assisting to feed, clothe, house and educate over 10 000 orphaned and vulnerable children across six provinces in our country.”

Wolman also revealed how much they raised in the evening. “Unfortunately, we were not able to get our costs of R82 000 sponsored, so our profit was R60 000 from ticket sales, R24 000 from the auction and R50 000 from raffle tickets sold.”

However, she was pleased with the conclusion of the event, “Overall the event ran very smoothly. A lot of fun and laughs were had by all and we were thrilled with the impact of our video presentation as well as the introduction from our beneficiaries. We hope it will be a call to action for many corporates looking for a worthwhile non-profit organisation to spend their corporate social investment (CSI) budget on.”
