Reddam Helderfontein pre-schooler wins maths award

FOURWAYS – Reddam Helderfontein pre-schooler Tinashe Machingawuta wins a maths award at a regional competition.

Tinashe Machingawuta, a four-year-old from Reddam House Helderfontein early learning school, raised the Reddam flag high at the recent A+ mathematics regional championships competition. Tinashe was awarded the Champion of Champions award for maths.

Tinashe took part in an exam that was divided into two components: Computing 20 math problems in six minutes using an apparatus such as an abacus and mental computation of 20 math problems in two minutes.

A+ Students is a Japanese method of education that teaches young children to solve complex arithmetic problems by playing with educational toys, like the Soroban and A+ Play Maths range of educational toys.

Ayanda Machingawuta, Tinashe’s mother, expressed her excitement.

“As a family, we’re very proud of her. She’s a very focused child and she started counting before she could talk, she enjoys numbers. At the moment, we don’t have any bigger expectations from her and we want to give her the freedom to express herself as a child.”
