Man arrested after hitting Sunninghill pedestrian

SUNNINGHILL – A man has been arrested after knocking down a pedestrian in Sunninghill on 15 May.

A man was arrested in Sunninghill after he allegedly hit a pedestrian in an attempt to escape from the police.

At about 1.20pm on 15 May a gold Volkswagen triggered a licence plate recognition camera located in the Sunninghill area as it entered the suburb from the direction of Kyalami.

In a bid to get away from law enforcement, the vehicle hit a woman crossing the road and was later linked to a crime in Bedfordview.

The incident was detailed on the Sunninghill Community Ratepayers Facebook page and later confirmed by the Sandton Police Station. “The vehicle turned right into Edison Crescent and was blocked by Savika [Armed Response] on the corner of Kilidini and Edison,” the social media post read in part.

“[Police] were dispatched but told Savika to keep the car as they were busy. There were three suspects in the vehicle.”

Although the security company vehicle tried to block the Volkswagen’s path, the driver apparently rammed it and drove away, eventually entering Maxwell Drive, hitting a pedestrian who was trying to cross the road at the traffic lights.

According to Savika, “The suspects jumped out of the car at this point and ran across Maxwell Drive toward the freeway and Woodmead, leading the police to launch a search for them.

“The lady who was hit by the car hurt her leg and bumped her head and was taken to the Sunninghill Hopsital.”

Captain Granville Meyer, the spokesperson for the Sandton Police Station, confirmed the incident. “A 32-year-old man from Yeoville was arrested for reckless and negligent driving and appeared in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court [on 17 May],” he told the Fourways Review.

“The [gold Volkswagen] vehicle was invovled in the commission of crimes in two cases currently being investigated by the police in Bedfordview.”
