A night of Fun for a good cause

DIEPSLOOT – The Edu Fun SA organisation is hosting its first ever fundraising event on the evening of 11 May, and you are invited to have fun while supporting a number of volunteer projects at Diepsloot Combined School.

If you are looking for a fun night out that also makes a positive change in the world, you are in luck!

The Edu Fun SA public benefit organisation work with grade 2s and 3s from the Diepsloot Combined School (DCS) in the informal settlement to teach the youngsters English and reading skills. Over the years a number of other projects have sprung up thanks to Edu Fun volunteers to holistically care for these underprivileged children as well. Because Edu Fun SA and the associated projects are all funded by donations from the public, the organisation will be hosting its first ever fundraising event on 11 May.

“We work to teach literacy in underfunded schools and also have a number of other projects at DCS,” said Meghan Rittenberry of EduFunSA.

The other projects are aimed at a

number of other needs which volunteers have noticed in the community and include the Ngangifisa project which is a food pantry that supports 12 child-headed households in Diepsloot, the health group which is a team of doctors, dentists and other medical professionals who do health screenings such as eye tests for the children and the Top Up project which makes sure that the children from DCS have uniforms and shoes that fit and are in good condition, repairing them as necessary and sometimes swopping uniforms as the children grow in and out of them.

“We also have the Edu Fun Hub project, which is building we’re hoping to erect on the DCS property where we can work, and we need funds for this as well.”

To raise this capital, Edu Fun SA has decided to host a fun night out at the St Peter’s School on Witkoppen Road. The event starts at 7pm and tickets cost R200 per person. The evening will include a free welcome drink, cocktails, finger foods, dancing and a 50/50 raffle where whoever wins the cash amount will split the prize in half with Edu Fun SA.

Also planned for the night are both a live and silent auction showcasing local artists.

“The live auction is auctioning off artwork by Mariska van den Brink, a travel photographer, who will be providing a number of prints from her travel.

“There will also be about four paintings which have been done by the children of DCS. The paintings were made over three days during our holiday programme,” added another volunteer, Sachi Fujii.

The fundraiser will be a chance for members of the public to have a great time while also supporting a number of good causes. “This night is a simple way to make a huge impact on a child’s life,” Rittenberry said. “The funds raised will be split equally among the projects. It’s a fun way to help – not everyone can come to the school [and volunteer their time to the projects] but you can still come and have a great time,” concluded Fujii.

The Edu Fun SA fundraiser will take place from 7pm at the St Peter’s School on Witkoppen Road and tickets cost R200 each.
