A celebration of all things geeky at the Dark Carnival

PAULSHOF – Geeks rejoice as a new nerd-inspired store, the Dark Carnival, opened its doors at Montecasino on 10 April.

It was a night filled with comic book characters, pop culture references and cosplayers as the Dark Carnival shop officially opened at Montecasino on 10 April.

The store, co-owned by engaged couple Kasia Jabrzemski and Richard Harman, is a geek’s one-stop-shop for all the comic-, movie-, series-, anime- and gaming-inspired merchandise anyone could want. Although the Dark Carnival has been selling their goodies online for years, starting up a physical store has been a dream for more than nine years.

The gathered crowd featured cosplayers dressed as comic or game characters and even Montecasino staff got dressed up. One particularly impressive feature of the new shop is a metre-long dragon figurine which has been placed on the wall outside the shop’s door which lights up and breathesm out smoke.

“The dragon started with an aluminium frame, much like a skeleton,” explained the dragon’s creator Juan du Preez, who was a special guest at the opening.

“Then we used expanding foam [to create the dragon’s body.”

Anchen de Wet (dressed as Black Canary from the DC Comic universe) and Linda du Toit (dressed as Ahri from League of Legends) cosplayed at the opening.

A type of clay was then added to the structure as well before the statue could be painted.

“It’s still unreal to see it up there,” Du Preez concluded.

The Dark Carnival was opened to the public on 11 April and is located near the Lima restaurant.
