Schools battle it out in Reef Cup

HELDERFONTEIN – The boys of Reddam began the tournament in fine form beating several schools such as a St David's invitational and Beaulieu.

Reddam House Helderfontein made their debut in the Reef Cup which is among the longest standing water polo tournaments in Gauteng.

The boys of Reddam began the tournament in fine form beating several schools including a St David’s invitational and Beaulieu.

Reddam suffered their first defeat to St Alban’s which saw them advance from the pool stage in the second position.

They next played Dainfern College in a playoff encounter for a quarterfinal berth. The Helderfontein boys put in a solid performance and hammered Dainfern 22–4.

Unfortunately, Reddam was defeated in the quarterfinal by St Benedict’s. The loss saw them compete in the 5–8th playoffs where they came up against Crawford College. The game was played at high intensity with both sides sticking to their game plans.

With both schools cancelling each other out throughout the game, Reddam produced a magical moment to narrowly defeat Crawford 11–10.

In the battle for the fifth position, they came up against Pretoria side, Affies. Both schools fought hard for a top-five finish but in the end, Affies came out on top with a marginal 8–7 victory.

Reddam’s coach Darren Campbell praised his boys for their performance.

“I’m really pleased with their performance, being a young side we wanted to establish ourselves, we wanted to play competitively and I think the boys did that very well,” Campbell said.
