Shootout leaves one dead and two arrests in Kyalami

KYALAMI – A violent shootout in Kyalami led to the death of one suspect and two arrests.

The Midrand police arrested two suspects following a tense car chase and shootout on 9 February.

Midrand police spokesperson Sergeant Matome Tlamela said the Cluster Task Team was patrolling in Kyalami and Midrand when they spotted a suspicious dark grey mini cooper. They checked the vehicle registration which was linked to a VW Golf. Tlamela added that the police signalled the driver to pull over but the driver increased his speed and the police gave chase.

The mini cooper occupants began shooting at the police who returned fire. The shootout carried on to Whisken Road in Kyalami where the mini cooper crashed into a boom gate of a complex.

Tlamela said, “One passenger came out from the back left seat of the mini cooper and surrendered while the other two suspects ran into the complex and separated in the parking lot of the complex and continued the shootout.”

One suspect was shot by the police and was declared dead later by paramedics while the other surrendered. The two arrested suspects were detained at the Midrand Police Station. Inside their vehicle were housebreaking implements and two unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

One of the arrested suspects was linked to a crime in Kempton Park and was granted bail of R10 000. He made his first court appearance on 14 February in the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court.

The other suspect appeared in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court on 11 February. Both suspects were charged with possession of a hijacked vehicle, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, reckless and negligent driving and attempted murder.
