Talented artist shines bright

PAULSHOF – Andrew Urmson from St Peter's Boys Prep showed off his artistic talents when he won second place at the Art by S.A'S No 1 competition.

Andrew Urmson from St Peter’s Boys Prep School showed off his artistic talents when he came second in the primary school category for Konica Minolta South Africa’s first-ever Art by SA’s No.1 art competition recently.

The ceremony, held at Konica Minolta’s head office on 2 February, was attended by all 12 finalists (three from special needs schools, three from primary schools, three from high schools and three from tertiary schools), with the winners taking home a share of R60 000 and a R20 000 bursary for their school, college or institution.

Being chosen as one of the 12 finalists was no mean feat as an initial 5 480 entries were received from more than 1 000 primary schools, high schools, special-needs schools and tertiary institutions around the country.

“Well done to the winners,” said Alten Hulme, chief sales and marketing officer for Konica Minolta South Africa.

“Their dedication, talent and enthusiasm made this competition a success.

“We have truly unearthed talented young South Africans by view of their artistic expression.”

Learners had numerous themes and a variety of mediums to choose from for their masterpieces. Their artworks were judged on seven criteria – creativity and originality, composition, content, execution, presentation, technical level and overall evaluation.

Andrew, who was in Grade 6 when he submitted his artwork, is now in Grade 7 at the school and still has a love for art.

“He is a very talented artist,” said Debbie Roest, who teaches art at St Peter’s Boys.

“He’s very imaginative and has been doing art since he was little. We’re very proud of him [winnning]. We’ve put a few copies of the artwork on our walls so that the others can see it.”

First place in the primary school category was awarded to Huda Hamid from Kimberley while third place was awarded to Janco Kotzé from Cape Town.
