Margi Brocklehurst of the Friends of Free Wildlife (FFW) sends an end-of-year message to the organisation’s supporters,

We at Friends of Free Wildlife are bursting at the seams. We have more than 200 birds of every species you can think of currently in our care, and as we release another one takes its place.

Currently, at FFW we are caring for a number of animals including four baby genets; a number of bats, including about 60 baby bats; chameleons; and hedgehogs.

I have also worked out that we see an average of between 20 and 25 new cases per day.

I would like to wish everyone a happy Christmas and to let you know that FFW will be open every day, including Christmas Day and New Year, to the public. In lieu of Christmas presents, I would like residents to consider making a donation to our organisation, which would be most welcome. People can donate the cost of a punnet of mealworms (R400); floating duck pellets, which are used to feed Egyptian geese, which I consider to be one of our most expensive animals both because they eat expensive food and because they need to be cared for until they are able to fly; and cash donations
