Calling for a cancer policy in the workplace
FOURWAYS – Narend Singh of the IFP has reiterated his support for an official workplace cancer policy and the work done by the Forever Changed Global Awareness Campaign.
Narend Singh of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) has reiterated his support for an official cancer policy in the workplace and Addi Lang’s work.
Lang, the Sandton-based cancer crusader, started the Forever Changed Awareness Campaign in 2014 after she was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer. The organisation aims to support and provide education on types of treatment to those affected by the disease, and both Singh and fellow party member, Advocate Anthony Mitchell attended the Forever Changed press conference hosted in Fourways last month.
Lang and others have called for a formal policy regarding cancer to be introduced into the world of labour.
“The IFP stands in full acknowledgement and support of efforts to introduce a formal cancer policy in the workplace,” Singh said in a recently-released press statement.
“Both Advocate Anthony Mitchell and I had the honour of addressing the media at the Forever Changed Global Awareness Cancer Campaign Press Conference, whereby the urgent necessity for a cancer policy in the workplace was fully interrogated.
“A cancer policy in the workplace will form a key component of the IFP’s labour and health policies in going forward until this matter is adequately addressed and accommodated by the labour law regime in South Africa.”
He also commended Lang and co-founder of the campaign, David Salomon, for bringing the matter to the attention of government and the public.
As evidence of this support, Singh mentioned that he had filed parliamentary questions to both the ministers of health and labour and had prepared a members statement, which will be delivered at the first opportunity to the National Assembly and also requested that the matter is debated in Parliament in the future.
