Spend 67 minutes at the Ark Animal Centre this Mandela Day

This Mandela Day, the Fourways Review is joining forces with the Ark Animal Centre in Chartwell to launch the centre’s new charity shop.

The centre and this publication – under the banner of the Caxton Cares initiative – are calling on community members to visit the centre from 10am on 18 July and to bring along any old clothes, toys or household items to help stock the new charity shop.

Candice Eilertsen of Ark Animal Centre explained why the centre has decided to start the charity shop. “We have been getting quite a few donations of clothes and other items, and then a couple of volunteers go to markets and sell them for us.

“We’ve actually noticed that it makes a big difference in helping to cover the running costs of the shelter every month, so after many suggestions, we’ve decided to focus on the charity shop and make it happen now because we’ve really been struggling the last couple of years and especially this year. In a bid to keep the shelter going, we are launching the shop.”

She went on to explain why it was important that community members visit the shelter on Mandela Day.

“We would appreciate the community’s support on the day because we feel we really do give it our all in terms of the personal sacrifices we have to make: Financial sacrifices and emotional stress, all to help and add to the bigger picture of animal rights, care and education.

“Honestly, without their support, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do.”

Of course, community members are also guaranteed to receive some puppy cuddles from the pups at the centre too.
