Fourways High cross-country runners shine

FOURWAYS – At the end of the cross-country season, six athletes from Fourways High School qualified for the inter-district meetings by consistently running well in the season.

The cross-country season has officially ended on a high note for the Fourways High School team.

“The cross-country season this year at stages resembled a bit of a European running season,” said Marcel Viljoen, who has coached cross-country and athletics at Fourways High School for 13 years.

“From mild temperatures to very windy and also very wet meetings. But schools still arrived en masse proving that our kids have what it takes.”

According to Viljoen, six athletes from Fourways High qualified for the inter-district meetings by consistently finishing in the top 18 positions at league races in the sport throughout the season.

Six runners from Fourways High School qualified for the inter-district meetings from running consistently well during the season.

“Two of these athletes achieved top 10 results at the district’s meeting, including Nadya Stolarczyk [who came 10th] and Nicholas van Zijl [who came eighth], and who was also part of the Northern Districts team which came second in the overall team competition.”

Athletes who qualified for the inter-districts:

  • Lubo Zlatev for the junior boys
  • Nadya Stolarczyk for the junior girls
  • Nicholas van Zijl for the senior boys
  • Caleb Johnstone for the senior boys
  • Lungisa Masondo for the senior boys
  • Siya Thebedi for the senior boys

The senior boy’s team (made up of van Zijl, Johnstone, Masondo and Thebedi as well as Prosper Morake and Ethan Thorpe) also qualified for the inter-league meeting on 1 June at the Rietvlei Nature Reserve. The team did their school proud by finishing fifth in the senior boys’ division and Van Zijl was the top performer, coming in seventh position.

“There were some very tired bodies at the end of each meeting, but also some very satisfied smiles.

“Running is one of the purest sports out there, where it comes down to nothing but a pair of running shoes and all the grit and determination that you can muster. Gains in fitness doesn’t come easy or quickly, but the results are always worth the effort,” concluded Viljoen.
