PAULSHOF – The Rivonia Bowls Club is growing in membership as a result of the recent Commonwealth Games.

The Rivonia Bowls Club is fast-attracting new members to their friendly and competitive club in Paulshof.

The club is located within the sports section of the Rivonia Recreation Club which also offers tennis, table tennis, karate, gymnastics as well as other sporting and social activities.

The club’s recent successes include member Elizabeth Geldenhuys winning the Johannesburg Bowls Association Ladies Seniors title and the men’s team winning the Mid-Week League Jack Rahn Shield.

The club also held the successful annual Nashua Central Gill Barker Ladies Trips Tournament where Linda Mynhardt of Pretoria Boys High Old Boys Club walked home with the title.

President of the club Syd Land said, “Following the great TV coverage of bowls in the recent Commonwealth Games in Australia, we are receiving many calls from interested non-bowlers wanting to know more about what used to be classed as an older person’s game. Bowling was shown to be anything but that, as most of the people shown on the TV were young ladies and men under the age of 30 years.

“It also showed that the game can be, and is, a very exciting one, especially the singles games which showed such an exciting and varied type of game from precise drawing to the jack and more aggressive hard driving shots.”

The Rivonia Bowls Club welcomes anyone interested in learning more about the sport. The club offers free coaching to all beginners and good competitive bowls for the more experienced players.
