Update: Police on manhunt for suspects who gunned down man in Lanseria driveway

LANSERIA – It is believed three suspects were involved.

The police in Diepsloot are on a manhunt for the suspects who shot and killed a man in Lanseria after he withdrew money from a Fourways bank yesterday, 7 May.

This is according to a media statement issued by the office of the Johannesburg West Cluster Commander, Major General J. T Pharasi, that was published on the Douglasdale Community Police Forum Facebook page.

The statement read, “It is alleged that the deceased was driving from the bank in Fourways, when he arrived at the gate of the plot , he was blocked by a silver grey Toyota Corolla from behind.

“Three unknown armed men came out of the Corolla and approached the deceased’s vehicle. They then opened the door of his vehicle and shot at him. He died at the scene after sustaining two bullet wounds in his upper body.

“The suspects then searched the deceased’s vehicle before fleeing in their own vehicle. It is not yet known what valuables were in the deceased’s vehicle.”

While the Fourways Review’s initial report (below) stated that the victim was 62 years old, the police statement said he was 66 years old.

The statement further said no arrests had been made and that police investigations were continuing.

“We appeal to community members who may have information that might assist the police investigations to phone Diepsloot police on (011)367 6472 or 08600 10111,” said the statement.

Initial report on 7 May, 2018: 5.03pm:

A 62-year-old man was reportedly gunned down in front of the gate to a house in Sunrella, Lanseria, this afternoon, 7 May.

This is according to a Facebook post by Drift Reaction cc, a company that specialises in corporate and private security services.

The post read, “This afternoon at about 12.51pm, our CEO Jarques Treptow received a call for urgent assistance from a resident. He was hysterical and asked for help as his father 62-years old had just been gunned down in front of their gate. The Iron Fist Squad, tactical units as well as [emergency medical services] and the Saps were dispatched.”

The post went on to say that the victim was found dead on their arrival.

It is believed that the victim had been on his way back from a bank in Fourways, where he withdrew a large sum of cash to pay for his wife’s funeral. His wife was said to have sadly passed away last Friday, 4 May.

“According to eyewitnesses he was followed by two male suspects in a Silver Toyota Corolla,” read the post.

“As he stopped at the gate they both got out and opened fire. They opened the door, took the money and sped off.

“Our prayers are with the family during this dreadful time.”

The Fourways Review is currently following up on this information and more information to follow.
