Residents who have been utilising Riversands Boulevard while the R511 has been closed for roadworks should note that from the 6 November, Riversands Boulevard will be closed, and the R511 will be open.

Pippa Rowles, public relations officer at Primedia said while the R511 is not yet complete, it will be a stabilised gravel road that will have been signed off by the road’s engineers. The speed limit is 40km per hour and the road will be open for traffic in both directions.

Rowles added, “This arrangement is necessitated by the build-up and hosting of one of the city’s biggest events, the Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge, which is taking place on Sunday 19 November. Riversands Boulevard is a private road, which had been generously opened to the public while the R511 was closed.

“Tenants and suppliers to the Riversands Incubation Hub as well as cyclists coming to collect their mountain bike and kiddies ride race packs will be given the access that they need, on presentation of their accreditation or race pack collection mailer, but the Boulevard will no longer be used as a public throughfare.”

Rowles said on Cycle Challenge Sunday, 19 November, the R511 will be open but with restrictions as per the comprehensive traffic management plan for the event, as signed off by the Event Safety and Security Planning Committee (ESSPC). For cyclists driving to the venue, the R511 will be open from both the Fourways side and from the N14 coming from a northerly direction. Marshalls will direct vehicles into the best parking area available.

“If you are not part of the event but usually use the R511, you will be able to use it on Cycle Challenge Sunday, but if you are travelling north you will be diverted off the road at one point as the top section of the road will be a one-way only feeding cyclists into the venue. Organisers strongly recommend that residents who aren’t trying to get to the venue use alternate routes and avoid the R511 as it will be heavily congested that morning.”

Details: For cyclists who are making their way to the venue, there will be double-lane access and ample parking if you drive along Main Road in Kyalami and turn into Zinnia Road to access the venue – this is a highly recommended route.

Rowles assured that traffic free-flow marshalls, as well as Metro officers, will be stationed at all major intersections leading to the venue, to direct traffic to their best possible route – please follow their instructions as they are implementing a holistic traffic plan directed by real-time conditions on the roads. South African Police Service officers will also be roving to alleviate pressure in various areas.
