Makro employees demand higher salaries

FOURWAYS – Makro employees stage a protest for a wage increase in the streets of Woodmead and Sunninghill. Read here for more details.

Makro employees staged a protest march on Friday, 25 August as part of a wage dispute. The march started at Makro Woodmead at 11am and protestors proceeded down Woodmead Drive onto Maxwell Drive, Sunninghill where they handed a memorandum to Makro management at 2pm.

No major incidents occurred during the march but the protest brought traffic to a standstill.

Ravi Jiwuth, who is a member of senior management at Savika Armed Response said, “Many thanks to the wonderful teams who assisted [on the day] of the protest: The South African Police, Johannesburg Metro police and Savika Armed Response. Also, thank you to Makro and Massmart staff members who ensured the safety of our suburb and residents.”

Thousands of protesting Makro employees cause major traffic chaos.

Jiwuth explained that the worst part of the day was the fact that the union applied for 1 500 people to participate in the march and on the day at least 4 000 people participated in the protest. Another concern was the behaviour of an unknown motorist who was aggressive and incited the crowd.

The protestors were transported in 23 buses.

Ravi Jiwuth from Savika Armed Response and the Johannesburg Metro Police monitor the Makro wage dispute protest.
