Fourways roadworks are finally being understood

FOURWAYS – A member of the mayoral committee, residents and Jodan Construction management attend a meeting about the recent road works and traffic congestion.

Anyone who lives in the Fourways community is well aware of the continuous traffic nightmare that started this year.

Jodan construction received many complaints and grievances about the noise and the dust, but most of all about the horrendous traffic congestion.

Mike Taylor, the contracts manager at Jodan Construction, said the complaints have decreased and that residents are starting to understand the process of the situation.

Representatives of Jodan, councillor David Foley, Member of Mayoral Committee Michael Sun and the engineering company WSP met with residents on 28 June 2017. A few critical issues were discussed.

ROADWORKS: Plans for Uranium Road in Fourways are revealed

Taylor informed the meeting that road works in Cedar Road will be finalised at the end of November. He said the back gate to the Life Fourways Hospital is now open and this will solve the issue of accessibility to and from the hospital. Jodan Construction will, however, be working on the intersections over the next week.

Foley explained that Jodan Construction’s timing is excellent since the schools will be closed and peak traffic will be less congested.

Residents who attended the meeting wanted to know if construction could be speeded up if Jodan Construction worked at night. Taylor answered, “It is very dangerous to work at night and quality decreases. Another problem is the reverse [beeping] sound of the construction engine. No one would get any sleep.”

Taylor suggested that people on motorbikes should also avoid the construction area because it is dangerous and could cost lives.

Jodan Construction’s Willem Olivier informed residents about tentative deadlines:

  • Work on Witkoppen Drive will be finalised at the end of 2017
  • Work on Uranium Street will also be finalised at the end of 2017
  • Work on Fourways Boulevard will only be finalised in the beginning of 2018.
Councillor David Foley, MMC Michael Sun and Abigale Ndlovu listen as the road work details are revealed.

Olivier noted that roadworks on Uranium Road cause a huge traffic problem with a lot of build-up in the afternoons. “Most of the congestion takes place on Cedar Avenue and builds up to William Nicol. People who use Uranium Street as an alternative route are creating another problem,” he explained.

Taylor told Fourways Review that the company will do their best to update the community on a more regular basis. Taylor stressed that members of the team are working hard and diligently to complete the project as soon as possible.

More information on what to expect will be released on Fourways Review’s website soon.
