The City of Joburg will hire 1 500 Metro police officers

JOHANNESBURG – According to Mashaba, hiring the additional Metro police officers would provide more visible policing as well as additional jobs in the city.

 

The City of Joburg is in the process of recruiting an additional 1 500 Metro police officers as well as increasing the City’s budget for enforcement operations.

During an Integrated Development Plan meeting, Executive Mayor of Johannesburg Herman Mashaba said the City would respond to feedback from various Intergrated Development Plan meetings by creating a sense of safety through improved public safety.

According to Mashaba, hiring the additional Metro police officers would provide more visible policing as well as additional jobs in the city.

“During the adjustment of the budget, we managed to raise money so that as I am talking to you, we are in the process of employing additional 1 500 police officers so that there will be visible policing in our communities,” said Mashaba.

Mashaba also added that it is essential to encourage those who join law enforcement to understand that it is a calling. He said that that it is important to ensure that salaries are market-related.

Metro police spokesperson, Wayne Minnaar said that there are about 3 000 officers currently so the additional officers would boost that number significantly. He also added that all recruits must have integrity and a desire to serve the community.

Minnaar said that there had been a great response from both men and women and he hoped the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department would select the right candidates.

Applications to become a Metro police officer close on 4 May.
