Athletes of Fourways Martial Arts Academy bring back 22 medals

FOURWAYS – Athletes of Fourways Martial Arts Academy competed in the recent National Championships and bring back the medals.

Athletes of Fourways Martial Arts Academy recently took part in the national championships hosted by Karate South Africa (KSA).

KSA hosted two championships which were held on 3 and 4 March in Durban and on 7 and 18 March in Cape Town where all eight provinces were represented in order to be the ultimate champion of champs.

According to the instructor of the academy, Stef Biagioni the championships also served as a ranking system for future international championships this year, such as the Zone 6, Senior All African Cup, Commonwealth and World U21 championships.

“In November last year, all our athletes had to take part in order to qualify for the Ekurhuleni Region. Those selected in Ekurhuleni had to qualify again, this year in February, to represent Gauteng, consisting of Ekurhuleni, Tshwane, Sedibeng; Johannesburg Central and the West Rand regions. Finally, the top four athletes in Gauteng (consisting of the five regions) took part in the nationals,” Biagioni said.

He added that, in summary, between the two national championships, the academy once again did extremely well by bringing back 22 medals. “We brought back a total of 10 gold medals, four silver and eight bronze,” he said.

Biagioni further added that he would also like to extend his gratitude to his senior referees, Sensei Roberta Biagioni and Sensei Alfredo Ruocchio, who not only qualified to the next level but helped during the weekend in both kata and kumite judging.

“A very big thanks for representing the academy who officiated so selflessly and tirelessly at the KSA Nationals. It was a hectic two days, but you guys all did a wonderful job. Fourways Martial Arts Academy is very proud of you,” he expressed.

“I would like to mention a special thank you to Jacqui Baynes for all her hard work as team manager for the Gauteng Karate Federation.”
