New hope for economic development with the help of Riversands Incubation Hub

Member of the Mayoral Committee for Economic Development, Sharon Peetz and her team visited the Riversands Incubation Hub to inspect the site and to see how the initiative has grown.

The hub has been open for a year and has been assisting small business owners with opportunities to enhance their skills and to grow their businesses.

The chief executive officer of the hub, Jenny Retief said she is very proud of what the hub has achieved in such a short time. “We are hoping the Commercial Park that is currently agricultural ground can be rezoned and opened for business soon,” said Retief.

Ward 94 councillor David Foley was also present at the site inspection on 7 March and said he would like to see more people there. “I have learned so much about all these new businesses already and I would like to see them prosper,” said Foley.

Peetz said they want the South African economy to grow and to enhance small business owners, which makes this hub the perfect way of doing so. “The hubs will help businesses to be more sustainable,” explained Peetz. The ideal plan is for these businesses to enter a three-year incubation period and to then move out into the commercial park.

“The hub is also a place for large corporate companies to source new and innovative products,” explained Retief.

The Riversands Incubation Hub also hosts events such as the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra in their lovely open-air amphitheatre. It has an agri-farm where unemployed people can learn the basics of farming.

Retief added the hub is hosting a variety of programmes which will enhance the skills and knowledge of anyone who wants to build a future for themselves and their businesses.
