Get the spelling right!

FOURWAYS – Is it important for correct spelling when it comes to the names of our suburbs and streets? Read more here.

On Main Road at the Kyalami and Lone Hill Boulevard crossing, the board directing road users to the different areas was noted as misspelt.

DA ward councillor Candice James confirmed that the request to change ‘Kyalami’ to Khayalami was originally requested by Midrand residents and that Khayalami’s name change was approved by council. “In the Zulu language, Khaya means home,” informed James. The sign has been misspelt and should read Khayalami. James had reported this to provincial roads approximately three weeks ago and is still awaiting their response with regard to when the name will be corrected.

Although in light of Lonehill being spelt as Lone Hill, James said that according to the Geographical Information System (GIS), Lone Hill is ithe correct spelling. “I assume that, over time, residents have been spelling the word as one word, but that is actually the incorrect spelling,” she said, adding that Lone Hill was originally registered as Lone Hill and not as Lonehill.

The misspelling of the names caused an uproar on social media with many residents taking to local community Facebook groups expressing their disappointment in the name of their suburb being incorrect on the road sign.

When Fourways Review contacted the Johannesburg Road Association (JRA) about the road sign, they said that they could not comment by the time of going of publication, as they need to complete a site inspection first.
