Taxi drivers’ behaviour in Fourways

FOURWAYS – Are taxi drivers breaking the rules of the road in the Fourways area? Read to find out.

Community members have raised their concerns over the years about the way taxis are driven in Fourways.

While driving around the area, Fourways Review, was able to observe and photograph taxi drivers parking in no-parking areas and not at designated taxi ranks, as well as driving on pavements during peak-hour traffic.

When contacted for comment, Metro police spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar stated that taxi drivers should not park illegally, but must rather park at taxi ranks. He added that taxi drivers’ routes are not regulated and may cause the drivers to stop according to passengers’ needs.

“With this said, Metro police will investigate the matter and taxi drivers found parking illegally on the road will receive a fine for their bad driving behaviour.”

Minnaar added that if community members witness bad driving, they should forward their complaints to the area commander, Amon Kganyago.

The Gauteng Transport Agency is yet to give comment.

Ward 94 councillor, David Foley said, “As as we all know stopping on a yellow line is against the law and citations should be issued accordingly.”

He added that the Metro police have been present the last couple of days at the William Nicol Drive and Fourways Boulevard intersection and the behaviour of all drivers has changed. “Although stop-and-go areas for taxis have been established, they still stop at the intersections.

Taxis park illegally underneath Witkoppen Bridge.

Their passengers also add to this problem by flagging down taxis in the intersection,” Foley explained.

“Both guilty parties need to be managed accordingly by the Metro police.”
