Lane restrictions on M1 double-decker bridge

JOHANNESBURG – There will be lane restrictions from 4 until 18 February on the M1 northbound.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency’s rehabilitation of the double-decker bridge on the M1 highway is at an advanced stage.

Spokesperson for the agency, Bertha Peters-Scheepers, said the project included structural repairs, rehabilitation and maintenance to bridge beams, tarring, expansion joints, drainage systems and the installation of new road signs.

“The majority of the repairs are presently being carried out at night to avoid traffic disruption,” she said.

There will be lane restrictions from 4 until 18 February. Of the four northbound lanes within the double-decker section, two will be closed. But only one will be closed during peak-hour traffic.

“Motorists are urged to familiarise themselves with the lane reductions during off-peak and peak times. They are also advised to plan their routes in advance to avoid delays and to consider alternative routes.”

She said commuters must consider the City’s Rea Vaya and Metro buses, Metrorail, the Gautrain and taxis as alternative transport.

“Traffic applications that can be downloaded from Google Maps and media will provide alerts on possible traffic jams and delays. Community members can also follow the agency [on their social media platforms] for the latest developments, journey planning tips, alternative routes and traffic advisory via the website.”
