This has been a recurring complaint from Fourways residents who drive to and from work, that every time Joburg north experiences heavy rain, Witkoppen Road, just passed Douglas Drive, floods. It seems that the outcome of these recurring floods is heavily backed- up traffic, safety risks for road users and unhappy motorists.

“The issue has been reported to the provincial roads office to be resolved urgently,” said Ward councillor David Foley.

He continued that it seems that the storm water drainage system cannot handle the massive volumes of water. “The drain would need to be cleaned out effectively to ensure a permanent resolution.”

Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Dr Ismail Vadi, has announced that the departmental road maintenance teams have been dispatched to attend to flooded provincial roads. Although no provincial roads were reported as being structurally damaged as a result of the continuance of heavy rain, some roads were affected due to debris.
