No ward committee elections in Fourways

FOURWAYS – Councillor says residents are not interested in making a difference.

There seems to be a new trend in Fourways, with wards 93 and 94 not getting enough applicants in order to have a full set of nominees for ward committee elections.

This means wards 93 and 94 will not vote on Saturday, 28 January, while Midrand’s ward 112 and  132 will. A ward committee consists of 10 spaces, each with a different portfolio. Ward 93 only secured five applicants, Ward 132 only had four, while Ward 112 had a full set of 10 applicants.

Ward 112’s councillor Madeleine Hicklin, said she is very happy that she has a committed group of residents willing to get involved in the running of the ward. Ward 132’s councillor Annette Deppe said, “I am unhappy with the community’s lack of participation. The committee is there to support the Councillor and to become the link between Councillor, service delivery and the community.”

Each successful ward committee member is paid a R1 000 stipend per month.

Councillor David Foley is in talks with ward governance to determine the next steps. “There will only be committee members for certain portfolios. My community has not come forward, and community apathy is evident as they aren’t interested in making a difference,” said ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe.

“It is disappointing that no one from the community is interested in making a difference. I would like to remind the residents that, unless you stand up and be counted for your vote, you cannot complain,”Deppe added.
