Witkoppen Combined Farm School held its annual prize-giving ceremony on 30 November to celebrate the academic and sporting achievements of its schoolchildren, as well as to recognise their diligence and leadership.
The ceremony started with the school body joining in song to sing the national anthem, followed by a warm welcome by the school’s principal, Sam Makama.
The schoolchildren proudly sing the country’s national anthem.
Police officers from Douglasdale Police Station attended the event to inspire the schoolchildren to keep up their good work. Colonel Eric Mogashu gave the youth a motivational talk about the consequences that follow when a person isn’t diligent in their academic work. “Anyone who works hard can make something good of their lives,” Mogashu said in contrast.
Teacher Rochelle Hicks impressed the crowd with a singing item she performed with some of her class. Hicks runs the library at the school and is passionate about what she does. “Every child deserves the knowledge to be able to read and write,” said Hicks.

Jean Berdou, chairperson of the Douglasdale Community Police Forum addressed the children as well to encourage them to grow as part of a community and to enhance themselves and their lives through working hard on their education, to be inquisitive and to rise above their own expectations.
He added that Christmas is a time of the year to celebrate what you were able to achieve in the year that lies behind you and to celebrate what lies in store for the year to come. “You determine your own future,” said Berdou to the schoolchildren.
As the foundation phase, intermediate phase and senior phase were awarded for their academic achievements, sporting abilities, diligence and leadership, their peers cheered them on and applauded.
