Traffic solutions for all

FOURWAYS – Will traffic be a problem forever? Read more.

Most residents will agree that traffic congestion is a reality and a frustration in the Fourways area.

This fact does not go unseen and action is being taken. DA councillor David Foley and his team intend to take control of the situation.

On 24 November a meeting was held to discuss exactly what the traffic situation and problems are in the Fourways area and how to solve some of the difficulties.

Two of the major obstacles raised were bad driving behaviour and lawlessness. “It is a holistic problem. Bad driver behaviour … is not [limited to] taxis,” said Foley.

Micheal Sun, MMC for Public Safety added, “Objectives of the meeting involved bylaw enforcement (loitering, hawkers and beggars) and traffic management.” He said that sometimes it takes him up to 40 minutes on a stretch of road that should take a few minutes.

Foley added that pointsmen influence the flow of traffic and a solution needs to be found.

Johan Wilken, manager at Traffic Signal Design said, “Detection sensors will be looked at as a solution to enhance the traffic flow in the area between Leslie Avenue and Montecasino Boulevard.”

Concerning bylaw enforcement between Kingfisher Drive and Leslie Avenue, deputy director of the Johannesburg Metrol Police Department Amon Kganyago suggested that law enforcers be deployed to control lawlessness. Concerning traffic congestion, Kganyago added that designated offload spots must be created for taxi purposes.

A taxi housing/ waiting area will also be looked at for public use; the message of prohibiting taxi violence will be conveyed to whomever it concerns.

“Residents, pedestrians and road users must be educated on safety. For example, the emergency lane must remain clear for emergencies only; it is the lives of people at risk,” said a concerned Foley, who added that taxi violence should become a thing of the past.
