BET puts African cuisine on the menu

JOBURG – Read on how you can take a trip with Lentswe Bhengu to discover Africa on a Plate.

Cooking up a storm was the order of the day as special guests were invited to try out BET’s Africa on a Plate’s cooking challenge.

The event took place at Pick n Pay’s Good Food Studio in Sandton on 24 November and guests were given exotic ingredients and tasked with creating an African plate in 45 minutes.

The challenge was inspired by the host of the show and head chef Lentswe Bhengu, who is seen in the show, travelling Africa to learn more about different cultural foods.

The cooking and lifestyle programme depicts Bhengu trying out mouth-watering cooking with a hint of travel and a dash of culture, as he gives insight to what different Africa cultures have to offer in terms of food.

Bhengu is joined by host Zama Memela, as they go on a culinary journey, introducing viewers to the glorious food culture of Africa.

“Whether it is learning about Nigerian street food, exploring the spice history of Zanzibar or delving into the Souks of Marrakesh, Zama and I stop at nothing to explore the diverse flavours and textures of the continent,” Bhengu said.

In the programme, the pair is seen cooking by the side of the road in the bush and in the cities they visit, before returning to South Africa to serve up their own interpretations of the dishes they have encountered.

The show, Africa on a Plate, runs two episodes back-to-back every Saturday at 5.15pm on BET DStv channel 129.
