“Education is one of the most important rights to mankind, and with that one hopes to learn more deeply about humanity,” Sun expressed.

According to him, he went down to where the protest was happening and was grossly disappointed at what he said was the criminally violent and destructive behaviour of the student protesters. “I witnessed innocent bystanders and motorists harmed for no reason.”

He added that the violent protesters had damaged both public and private properties, stoned a number of vehicles caught in between the action and allegedly looted businesses in the area. “The City’s fire engine was also attacked for trying to put out a fire. No right to protest can override one’s right to safety, and violence and will not bring about better education for anyone. “The violent protesters and alleged looters must understand that there are consequences to their unlawful actions as we cannot stand by and watch our city descend into a state of lawlessness.”

The Department of Public Safety calls upon the residents who work or live in the area of Braamfontein to exercise extra vigilance and remain indoors during any such violence protests.
